Universal Mosaic Curriculum

To deepen our commitment to every student, recognizing the multiple forms of diversity understood and regarded as indispensable sources of knowledge, the NYCDOE is co-designing a rigorous, inclusive, affirming, and standards-aligned K-12 English Language Arts and Math curricula, the Universal Mosaic Curriculum, that will be available to all schools by fall 2023.

Current work underway for the Universal Mosaic Curriculum include:

  • Diverse Classroom Book Collections at each NYCDOE school that center the lived experiences of NYC students
  • Elevating the insights and perspectives of students, families, educators, and community stakeholders through continuous engagement to co-design the Universal Mosaic Curriculum.
  • Prioritizing high-quality learning experiences where students both see themselves in the curriculum while practicing and exceeding proficiency in content and applied skills aligned to rigorous learning standards

Classroom Collections

Principals are ensuring classroom collections of books reflect the identities and culture of their communities. All K-5 schools have received the Scholastic Rising Voices collection, which includes diverse and grade-level books. Schools will receive the Mosaic Collections for classroom reading during the 2021-2022 school year; this collection includes texts to supplement diverse classroom materials. Texts from the Scholastic Rising Voices and Mosaic Collections are available now as eBooks and audiobooks in the Citywide Digital Library on SORA.

The NYCDOE’s Office of Curriculum, Instruction, & Professional Learning and Scholastic are facilitating professional learning sessions for teachers who are using the Rising Voices and Mosaic collections throughout the school year. These professional learning sessions will focus on preparing teachers to engage students in a knowledge-building approach through critical reading, writing, listening, and speaking with rich, meaningful culturally diverse grade-level text.

NYCDOE invites students, families, NYCDOE educators, and community members to recommend culturally diverse and representative books for review to help us identify new titles reflecting a wide range of distinctive and inclusive experiences, multiple perspectives, genres, formats, styles, and subject matter to enhance classroom collections and support students’ independent reading. Please complete the Mosaic Book Collections Recommendation Form to share a suggestion!

Engagement Opportunities

The NYCDOE will bring synthesis of recommendations to each district to deepen our understanding of community stakeholders’ experiences with curriculum.
