About the Office of Food & Nutrition Services
The New York City Department of Education is the largest system of public schools in the United States, serving about 1.1 million students in over 1,700 schools. The Office of Food & Nutrition Services (OFNS) serves around 850,000 meals to these students each school day. Of these, over 700,000 meals are provided at no charge to the students or their parents/guardians. Over the past decade, we have made tremendous strides in improving the nutrition and taste of our meals. We are committed to promoting healthy food choices among our students and maintaining high nutritional standards while offering delicious and satisfying menu choices.
OFNS Dietetic Intern
Responsibilities
First you will observe the School Food Service Manager/Preceptor performing daily tasks such as monitoring breakfast & lunch service or educating students on the importance of eating healthy meals. Then our SFSM’s will then observe you performing the same task. If your performance is satisfactory, then you may undertake that activity independently under the SFSM’s supervision. Other responsibilities are in accordance with curriculum guidelines set forth by your internship program.
Qualifications/Areas of Study
Potential interns must be self-motivated, possess strong verbal/communication skills, have the ability to offer new ideas and innovative suggestions. Interns will also be required on a limited scale to observe and assist with daily operational tasks.
In order to be considered for the program, degree concentration must fall under the following categories: Nutrition, Dietetics, Health and Nutrition Sciences with a concentration in Food and Nutrition, Home Economics, Culinary Arts, Baking and Pastry Arts, Hotel/Restaurant Institutional Management, Food Service Entrepreneurship, Food Service Administration or closely related field.

OFNS District 75 Intern
Program Overview
The collaboration between District 75 and the Office of Food & Nutrition Services was designed to expose New York City students to the food industry by providing them with hands‐on, real life work experience. The program aims to develop skills students learn within their transitional schools and the opportunity to work in OFNS kitchens.
Qualifications/Areas of Study
Potential interns must be self‐motivated, organized and pursuing a career within Food Service. Students gain food service experience and are considered professional employees in a professional work environment. Interns will be required on a limited scale to observe and assist with daily operational tasks.
